Join me as I take on the challenge of trying on a whole bunch of clothes as a plus-size woman, sharing my real thoughts and experiences along the way!
Trying on clothes as a plus-size woman can be a really relatable experience for many of us. It's something that we've all been through at some point or another, and it's an experience that can be both frustrating and emotional. One of the biggest challenges we face is the limited size options. Most clothing stores only carry up to a size 12, and even then, those sizes are often few and far between. It's like, where are the rest of us supposed to go? Do we just not get to participate in fashion because we don't fit into a certain mold? It's frustrating because we know we're not alone, but it feels like the fashion industry is just ignoring us.
Another challenge is the fits. Even when we do find clothes that are supposed to be our size, they often don't fit right. They're either too tight, too loose, or just plain uncomfortable. And don't even get me started on the emotional toll it takes. Trying on clothes can be a really vulnerable experience, especially when you're already feeling self-conscious about your body. It's like, you're standing there in front of the mirror, and you're just staring at yourself, wondering what's wrong with you.
And then there's the whole shopping experience itself. Sometimes it feels like clothes are just not made for us. Like, have you ever tried to find a pair of jeans that fit your waist and your thighs and your calves all at the same time? It's like, impossible. And the worst part is, it's not just about the clothes themselves, it's about how we feel when we're trying them on. We feel like we're not good enough, like we're somehow broken because we don't fit into these societal standards of beauty.
I remember one time I was trying on clothes at a boutique store, and I found this really cute dress that I just fell in love with. But when I went to try it on, it was way too small. I mean, I knew it was going to be a stretch, but I just wanted to see how it would look. And when I looked in the mirror, I just felt so disappointed in myself. I felt like I wasn't good enough, like I was somehow less worthy because I couldn't fit into that dress.
But despite all the struggles, I've also had some really great experiences trying on clothes. Like, I remember one time I found this amazing pair of jeans that fit me perfectly. I mean, they were comfortable, they were flattering, and they just made me feel confident. And when I looked in the mirror, I didn't see all the things that were wrong with my body. I just saw a person who looked nice and felt good in what they were wearing.
There was this one time when I was shopping with a friend, and we found this really cute top that we both wanted to try on. And when we looked at each other, we both just burst out laughing because we looked ridiculous. I mean, the top was just not made for our body type, but we didn't care. We just had fun with it, and that's what it's all about. It's about finding clothes that make you feel good, not about fitting into some societal standard of beauty.
One pivotal moment for me was when I finally found a store that carried my size. I mean, it was like, this amazing feeling of being seen and being heard. It was like, finally, someone gets it. And when I went into that store, I didn't feel like I was somehow broken or less worthy. I just felt like I was a normal person, trying on clothes and finding what looked good on me.
Trying on clothes as a plus-size woman can be a really emotional and frustrating experience, but it's also an opportunity to learn and grow. It's about finding what works for you and what makes you feel good, and it's about embracing your body, flaws and all.
