The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a serious warning on December 21, 2023, urging parents and caregivers to immediately stop using all baby loungers. These seemingly cozy products pose a significant suffocation and fall hazard to infants due to failing to meet federal safety regulations.
What's the Problem with Baby Loungers?
Baby loungers are inclined or upright nests designed for infants to relax or play. However, the CPSC identified several safety concerns with these products:
- Lack of Stand: Unlike cribs and bassinets, loungers typically lack a stable stand, creating an uneven sleeping surface for infants. This can lead to rolling, tilting, or tipping, increasing the risk of suffocation or head injuries.
- Non-compliance with Safety Standards: The loungers in question violate the CPSC's Infant Sleep Products Rule. They fail to meet requirements for side height, fabric-sided openings, and labeling, making them unsafe for regular infant use.
- Inadequate Warnings and Instructions: The loungers often lack clear warnings about the suffocation and fall risks, and their instructions may be inadequate or missing, further jeopardizing infant safety.
The CPSC's Urgent Call to Action:
The CPSC strongly urges all consumers to immediately stop using any and all baby loungers, regardless of the brand or purchase date. They recommend taking the following steps:
- Discontinue use of the lounger immediately.
- Unzip and disassemble the product.
- Cut up the lounger cover, sleeping pad, and side bumpers.
- Dispose of the cut-up pieces in the trash or textile recycling bin, following local regulations.
Safe Sleep Practices for Infants:
Remember, the safest place for an infant to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard. Always use a fitted sheet only and avoid placing any blankets, pillows, toys, or other items in the infant's sleeping environment. Additionally, infants should always be placed to sleep on their back.
Spread the Word!
Share this vital information with other parents, caregivers, and anyone who might be using baby loungers. By raising awareness and taking immediate action, we can help prevent tragic accidents and keep our little ones safe.
