U.S. turkey consumption has stepped up over the years. It's not eaten mainly at Thanksgiving and Christmas anymore, but throughout the year. The process of producing turkeys for human consumption is as barbaric, if not more so, than the process of producing chickens for mass production.
Turkeys are kept in cramped, dark spaces to deter the naturally aggressive behaviors that occur when an animal is kept confined to roam and feed freely without space. They are overfed to the point that the weight of the breast tissue is not borne by their thighs. And this animal that typically has a life span of 10 years is generally killed at around 2 years.
Unhealthy and overcrowded conditions mean that disease among commercial turkeys is widespread, causing about 2.7 million turkeys to die each year in their sheds. Deformation of the feet and legs, heat stress and hunger caused by the inability of young birds to locate the feed and water troughs are commonplace. Ulcerated feet and burns from the hock are normal-induced by prolonged contact with urine and feces infected litter.
Can you really sit at your next holiday dinner and look the same way at a roasted turkey?
Turkeys come with the same cleanliness and cooking instructions as do chickens. To ensure that any disease-causing bacteria are completely killed, you have to be sure they are cooked to a specific temperature. You should use bleach to scrub up any counter space to destroy all bacteria again.
It makes the case for switching to a vegetarian diet compelling, isn't it?
Suddenly the jokes about vegetarian meals, with nut loaves and vegetables rather than meat, seem to make more sense, not only from a health point of view, but also from a humane issue. Why do we persist in eating so that we become unhealthy and are inherently bad for us?
